The North West Provincial Government has recognised the serious nature and
extent of the problem of corruption in society and has taken a stance to fight
corruption in all its manifestations.
To demonstrate its commitment to fighting corruption, Premier Edna Molewa
today inaugurated the North West province Anti-Corruption Forum.
Delegates representing various sectors such as the public sector, civil
society and business have undertaken to join government in developing a culture
of zero tolerance of fraud and corruption.
The forum shall advice government on the implementation of strategies to
combat corruption. It will share information and best practices on sectoral
anti-corruption work and serve as an advisory body to sectors on the
improvement of sectoral anti-corruption strategies.
All the sectors will ensure that the fight against corruption is fully
co-ordinated and integrated with synergies between the elements of prevention,
detection, investigation, prosecution and monitoring as well as synergies
between the different spheres of government.
The scope of work and mandate of the provincial anti-corruption
co-ordinating committee would also include:
* fostering partnerships with stakeholders and government departments
* it will also partake in the development of North West provincial
anti-corruption strategy and implementation plan
* develop a communication strategy that will inform government's interaction
with the two sectors
* support both sectors in the implementation of various anti-corruption
initiatives
* create a platform for exchange of knowledge and good practices.
Meanwhile the departments would also be expected to establish minimum
anti-corruption capacity requirements where they ensure that all
anti-corruption related activities are well co-ordinated.
Consisting of 40 members on the basis of ten representatives from each
sector, the provincial anti-corruption forum shall subsist for as long as
corruption continues to threaten democracy or until disestablished by sectors.
The term of office of representations will be for a two year period.
A Memorandum of Understanding will be signed by the different sectors to
seal the partnership.
The official launch of the provincial Anti-Corruption Forum will take place
at a later date.
Premier Edna Molewa thanks all those whose commitment and unwavering support
ensured that "we become one of the few provinces in the country that have
established such fora."
