Women in North West have always been encouraged to participate in businesses
to help empower themselves through collective efforts, resources and
skills.
On Friday, 15 September 2006, in Rustenburg one of the city's biggest
shopping malls will be a hive of activity. Hundreds of women from around the
province will witness the launch of a women's co-operative, Bothakga jwa Bomme.
This glass business entity is a project initiated to empower women in the
second economy. It will contribute to the sustainability of women involved in
this co-operative.
Since her tenure as MEC for Economic Development and Tourism during the late
90s, now currently leader of the province, Premier Edna Molewa has passionately
encouraged women to participate and be active in the country's economy.
Molewa said the North West government has been pioneering in terms of the
support and development of co-operatives in their various forms. She said the
pioneering role has been illustrated by events such as small, medium and
micro-enterprise (SMME) Summit, Industrial Development Corporation (IDC)
conference, Provincial Growth and Development Summit, co-operative summit held
in the past.
Training on how to manufacture glasses for targeted markets has been
planned. South African National Non-Government Organisation Coalition (SANGOCO)
North West in partnership with Green Glass, an organisation that produces green
glass by hand and working from mobile containers will provide training for the
women.
The launch is in partnership with government's private partners, some
foreign embassies, prospective buyers of the co-operative's finished products
and non- governmental organisations.
Media is invited to attend the launch.
