North West Premier Edna Molewa, the Minister of Transport, Jeff Radebe and
the Deputy Minister of the Provincial and Local Government, Nomatyala Hangana
will jointly lead the celebrations of the International Human Rights Day to
mark the end of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign for No Violence Against Women
and Children, which will be held as follows:
Date: Monday, 10 December 2007
Time: 9h00
Venue: Setlagole Stadium, Setlagole Village (Ratlou Local Municipality)
The event marks the culmination of a national campaign on the 16 Days of
Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, which was launched around
the country on 25 November 2007 to increase awareness about the negative impact
of violence on women and children as well as society as a whole, especially at
grassroots level.
The following are but some of the campaign's key objectives:
* To generate an increased level of awareness amongst South Africans
pertaining to the incidence of violence perpetuated against women and children,
how it manifests itself within society and the negative impact it has on these
vulnerable groups.
* To challenge perpetrators of these offences to change their behaviour.
* To enhance and increase partnerships between government, private sector,
civil society, labour, sectoral groups, faith based organizations, both print
and electronic media and the diplomatic corps in a concerted effort to spread
the message against violence.
* To align events in government's programme with that of the international
theme of the year, this focuses on matters relating to Women's Human
Rights.
* To highlight the stories of survivors of gender-based violence and the impact
the campaign has had on their lives.
This event at Setlagole will be closing ceremony as it will be on the last
day of the campaign and the North West has been chosen as the hosting
province.
Cyclists will hand over a Torch of Peace to Minister of Transport, Jeff
Radebe, marking the transition from the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence
Against Women and Children into government's Arrive Alive Campaign, which will
be intensified as the festive season gains momentum.
