The North West Premier expressed shock and sadness learning of the fatal
accident of one of the Sasol Tigers Jet display team aircraft in Cape Town.
It is confirmed that the aircraft, an Aero Vodochody L-29 Delfin Jet
operated by Martin van Straten a member of the Sasol Tigers display team,
crashed into the sea off Milnerton on Thursday afternoon while taking part in a
formation display flight. Martin was declared dead after being recovered by the
rescue team at the sea.
Premier Molewa said that it was sad that such an incident happens two weeks
before the Mafikeng Airshow takes place on Saturday, 7 October 2006. The North
West province has had a magnificent relationship with the Sasol Tigers Jet
display team. They had adopted Mafikeng airport as their home base and we were
looking forward to their full participation during the Mafikeng Airshow.
"Martin van Straten has been very inspirational to our aviation team at the
Mafikeng Airport. He has always been positive about the province's awareness
campaign bringing aviation to the people, especially to our people. The North
West community will really miss his contribution to a just cause," remarked MEC
for Transport, Roads and Community Safety Jerry Thibedi.
"He leaves a big vacuum in the aviation field and hope with the aviation
awareness programme the province has embarked on, other enthusiasts will
continue and uphold his spirit flying," said MEC Jerry Thibedi.
"On behalf of the people of North West province, I wish to convey my
condolences to the pilotsâ family, friend and colleagues of the Sasol Tigers
Jet display team. I hope they find peace during this difficult time. May His
Soul Rest in Peace," said Premier Molewa
