"Tomorrow's Science and Technology are in our youth's hands"

The media is invited to join Deputy Ministers Derek Hanekom of Science and Technology and Enver Surty of Education when they visit the iThemba Labs at Faure, Somerset West on Tuesday, 15 May 2007. Details of the event are as follows:

The visit forms part of this year's National Science Week campaign (12-19 May 2007). Themed "Tomorrow's Science and Technology are in our youth's hands," the campaign aims at persuading the youth to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology while also highlighting the important role that science plays in everyday life.

The Deputy Ministers will be accompanied by one hundred learners. The visit will include a tour to the labs' control room and will expose the learners to a world of career opportunities offered by this institution. These include medical radiation, radionuclide production and material research.

iThemba Labs is a multi-disciplinary research centre that provides facilities for applied and basic research using particle beams, particle radio therapy for the treatment of cancer and the supply of accelerator-produced radioactive isotopes for nuclear medicine and research.
