Mpumalanga Safety and Security MEC Dina Pule will meet all public safety
councillors and managers in the province at a MEC and municipalities (MUNMEC)
meeting at the Steve Tshwete Municipality tomorrow.
The MUNMEC is a government co-ordinating structure that is aimed at ensuring
that provincial departments and municipalities co-operate closely. The MUNMEC
will consider presentations on the Afrika concept, the Provincial Crime
Prevention Framework (PCPF), the Thusano Integrated Approach Policing Model and
Community Corrections.
The Afrika concept is the blue print that is aimed at turning Mpumalanga
into a policing model for the country by creating a people centred police
service, introducing basic policing principles and dealing decisively with
crimes against women and children. The concept will make it easier for the
police to implement sector policing as it is the most basic form of
policing.
The PCPF aims at tackling factors that lead to crime and is developmental in
nature. It is the umbrella framework through which social crime prevention
initiatives are implemented. A number of projects are to be launched in the 14
priority stations where contact crimes are highly prevalent, among others the
Masupatsela Security Volunteers concept, the Shebeens Tavern Project and Safer
Schools.
MEC Pule believes that crime can only be fought through partnerships between
the community and the police. The capacity of municipalities to prevent crime
will be enhanced through the formulation of municipal safety plans which will
be based at ward level.
The MUNMEC will be held at the Steve Tshwete Municipality. The media will be
briefed after the meeting.
