This trip is as a result of the an invitation of Ambassadors from South East
Asian nations who requested Premier Dipuo Peters together with business
representatives to participate in trade and investment business seminars that
will be hosted in their respective countries. In this case it will be in the
United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Malaysia.
The Premier has also extended such an invitation to the business community
in Asia through their respective Ambassadors to participate in the 2007 Asia
Expo that will be held in Kimberley from the 22 to 24 August 2007.
The Asia Expo which will be held next month in Kimberley has the following
components: Exhibition, Mineral Beneficiation Conference and the International
Investors Conference.
The countries that the Premier together with the MECs, Mr P Saaiman and Mr
Fred Wyngaardt and the whole delegation will be visiting are ranked as those
whose economy is characterised by high quality infrastructure, flexible and
efficient markets, healthy and well educated workforces and a high level of
technological readiness and innovative capacity.
United Arab Emirates
The terms of trade gains linked to oil prices have boosted growth rates and
reinforced already high levels of confidence in the business community,
resulting from ongoing institutional modernisation and improvements in
macroeconomic management.
Singapore
It is a regional centre for business and an increasingly important source of
foreign investment in Asia. Despite a population of only three million people,
Singapore's total volume of trade is the 13th highest in the world.
Malaysia
This is one of South Africa's biggest trading partners in Asia. South Africa
has very cordial and strong relations with Malaysia. Malaysia is one of South
Africa's largest foreign investor's from Asia. Malaysia trade commodities
include:
* animal and vegetable oils and fats
* chemicals
* machinery and transport equipment
* manufactured goods and equipment
* mineral fuels and lubricants.
The Northern Cape government will as part of this trip showcase a Northern
Cape Seminar in Malaysia, United Arab Emirates and Singapore be held from the 6
to 21 July 2007 to achieve the following objectives:
* explore economic and trade opportunities
* market the province as an investment and tourist destination
* give an opportunity for business from the Northern Cape to have one-on-one
sessions with their foreign counterparts to determine investment leads
* to promote 2010 trade and investment opportunities
* to identify export and investment leads by marketing the Northern Cape
through the six anchor projects that include the promotion of goat meat,
promotion of Northern Cape produced wines and the promotion of a cargo hub.
Updates on the discussions and developments in the various countries will be
communicated to the media.
