D Peters urgers communities to be cautious in winter weather

Cold weather warning

22 May 2006

Premier Dipuo Peters wish to appeal to communities, especially those
residents who live in the informal settlements, to exercise extreme caution and
forethought in dealing with the harsh winter weather that is bracing the
country.

In many situations residents use dangerous and hazardous forms of heating up
their homes to keep their families warm and these grave instruments may be
deadly.

The imbawula form of making fire which is the traditional way of making fire
with firewood and coal in a tin structure may lead to shack fires if left
unattended.

Parents are also requested to exercise extra vigilance over their children
who may be tempted to make fires to keep themselves warm without the presence
of an adult.

In many instances in the past, families were tragically wiped out of the
face of the earth and were reduced to ashes due to unsafe methods of heating up
their homes. In many of these cases innocent children become the victims as
they are left alone in their homes without the presence of an adult.
