On behalf of the Northern Cape Government and the people of the Province,
Premier Dipuo Peters wishes to extend her sincere condolences to the Sigcau
relatives and friends at the untimely death of their loved one.
May they find comfort, strength and peace in knowing that we share in their
sorrow and loss. Mme Sigcau will be sorely missed for her contribution in
bringing services to our people and being part of a government which strived to
improve the lives of our people. Her diligence and commitment in executing her
tasks meticulously cannot be forgotten.
The Premier is deeply saddened at the passing away of Stella Sigcau, African
National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee member and Minister of
Public Works, who passed away at a Durban hospital on Sunday, 7 May 2006.
Minister Sigcau will be remembered as a widely respected leader of the
democratic movement and a committed Cabinet Minister who served the people of
South Africa with dedication in three successive democratic administrations,
from 1994 to 2006.
Minister Sigcau was elected to the ANCâs National Executive Committee at its
Bloemfontein National Conference in 1994 and again at the ANC's Stellenbosch
National Conference in 2002. As a national leader of the movement she attended
to her political and organisational responsibilities with resolve and
distinction.
As Minister of Public Works since 1999, she played a central role in the
national effort to eradicate poverty, develop skills and create work
opportunities. She provided political leadership to key development
initiatives, like the Expanded Public Works Programme, which remain at the core
of the country's efforts to eradicate the legacy of its apartheid past.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, the people of the Northern Cape
pay tribute to and salute her as a leader of the people, a great woman who
occupied a special place in the lives of many people. We will honour her
memories as one of the great leaders of our nation who led the people and did
no turn a blind eye to underdevelopment and social advancement.
Mme Stella Sigcau, the nation salutes you.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman we also say, may your hearts
find comfort in knowing that we care. May her soul rest in peace.
