D Peters on database of retired nurses

Establishment of a Northern Cape database of available retired
nurses

23 February 2007

All categories of health workers play a central role in the delivery of
health services and they are the most critical factors in ensuring that the
health system functions smoothly and efficiently.

Premier Dipuo Peters believes that the best way in which government can be
able to respond to health challenges facing us today, particularly in the rural
areas of our province, is through strengthening work systems.

Premier Peters says government can draw from the knowledge and skills of
retired nurses who are still able to work so as to give support to the existing
staff establishments. This will ensure that we are able to provide healthcare
services to our people efficiently and curb some of the hiccups we are
experiencing in heathcare institutions.

The use of retired nurses will also address the implementation of the Human
Resource Plan for Health which provides a framework for addressing the
challenges of supply, distribution and capacity of human resources in the
health sector.

A public invitation to all retired nurses will ensure that we reach out to
all our nurses, near and far to achieve our objective.

While we continue to deal with major challenges and finding long-term
solutions, it is critical that we should develop this database of nurses who
are still willing and able to work.

As government we certainly believe that this initiative will make a huge
difference in the lives of our people.
