D Hanekom to brief media on School Sanitation Project, 8 Oct

Eastern Cape school sanitation project

4 October 2007

Amatola Water (AW) is committed to improving the quality of people's lives
and goes beyond its scope of proving bulk water to municipalities.

AW recently initiated a joint project with the Eastern Cape Department of
Education and the Department of Science and Technology. The project, with an
investment of R48 million over a two-year period, is aimed at providing water
and sanitation services, including construction, to rural schools.

The Department of Education has invested R40 million and Department of
Science and Technology has allocated R8,8 million towards the project. The
Department of Education component is tasked with constructing new pit latrines
at rural schools, where no facilities existed. Two contractors are currently
involved in this work. The Department of Science and Technology component of
the project focuses on establishing small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs)
to empty pit latrines at the 750 rural schools.

On 8 October, we shall hold an information session at the Regent Hotel, East
London. This information dissemination session will outline the project
outcomes and present progress reports.

On 9 October 2007, the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Mr Derek
Hanekom will visit the site to assess progress on the project.

The Eastern Cape MEC for Education Mr Johnny Makgato will also be
present.

Programme available on request.
