On Wednesday, 30 August, at about 20h00 a parole violator, Mr Nigel
Mattheysen was arrested and brought to the Buffelsjag Correctional Centre to be
detained. On their arrival at the centre the violator requested permission to
go a nearby toilet. While he was in the toilet, the arresting officials and the
official on duty at the gate heard shots from the direction of the toilet. On
closer investigation and with assistance from the police, they discovered that
Mattheysen had shot himself.
He was admitted to the Swellendam hospital, was declared brain dead at about
00h50 and was declared dead at 09h30 on 31 August 2006. His family and next of
kin have been informed of his passing.
In terms of procedure an internal investigation and an investigation by the
South African Police Services (SAPS) will be conducted into the circumstances
surrounding this unfortunate incident.
