Shaik
7 November 2006
The Department of Correctional Services has noted the judgment of the
Supreme Court of Appeal which upheld the fraud and corruption conviction of Mr
Schabir Shaik and also instructed him to report to the nearest correctional
centre within 48 hours.
The Department wishes to state that it only deals with convicted offenders
once they have reported to the nearest correctional centre. Mr Shaik, however,
has not reported to any of our centres and as such he is not in our custody as
yet.
The operational matters regarding his admission, grading or classification
in terms of our policy on convicted persons, will only be determined by a
computerised pointscoring system once he has been admitted to a correctional
facility.
These are common and general operational procedures that apply to any
offender regardless of crime committed or public status of the offender.
