Correctional Services resolves Muslim dress code dispute

Correctional Services and the Muslim Judicial Council commit to
settle the dress code dispute

The Department of Correctional Services and the Muslim Judicial Council
(MJC) have today – 11 August 2006 - reached an agreement on a way of settling
the impasse that followed the dismissal of Ms Fairouz Adams, of Breede River in
the Western Cape, in relation to the departmental dress code.

In terms of the agreement Ms Adams will resume her duties at Breede River
Community Corrections Office as soon as possible but no later than 1 September
2006 with a back-pay and a provision to wear private clothes until further
notice, while she and the Muslim Judicial Council are given up to six months to
make representations to the department for consideration regarding changes to
the dress code.

The agreement also provisionally puts on hold the processing of the Labour
Court application subject to the final decision taken after the grace period of
six months given for submissions on changes to the departmental dress code.
