The Department of Correctional Services continues to close loopholes as it
seeks to build an ethical and security correctional system in South Africa. The
Department will launch a special training programme over a period of three
months to equip over 880 managers with skills to improve ethical behaviour and
fight corruption on 5 July 2006 at the ABSA Conference Centre in Montana
(Pretoria North).
The R4 million programmes will be officially launched at 08h20. The
Department will release in groups, managers to attend the three day programme
which will run up to the end of September 2006.
The Chief Deputy Commissioner for Central Services Ms Jenny Schreiner says,
âthe recent foiled and successful escapes showed that although significant
progress was made in improving security overall with among others the
introduction of the state of the art security technology, the human factor
remains a key intervention area for eliminating fraud and corruption in
corrections.â
She said managers will be trained on nine modules that include:
* ethos in correctional services;
* evolution of correctional servicesâ anti-corruption efforts;
* understanding of corruption and factors contributing to corruption;
* understanding anti-corruption strategies;
* risk management;
* conflict, diversity and change management;
* ethical reasoning and decision making;
* professional ethics for the public service.
Ms Schreiner says the Department entered into a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) with the South African Management Development Institute (SAMDI) for
purposes of improving corporate governance in correctional services.
