Correctional Services on escape by two inmates in Pretoria

Escape from Pretoria Local Correctional Service Centre

1 February 2006

Today, 1 February 2006, at about 11h30, there was an escape at the Pretoria
Local Correctional Centre that houses awaiting trial detainees after inmates
apparently forced open the bars of a window, gained access to the roof of the
centre and used a rope to go down.

Two inmates were spotted whilst going down to the ground with that rope and
were immediately arrested. It was suspected that five other inmates could have
escaped, but a head count conducted established that only three escaped. Both
an external investigation by the South African Police Service and an internal
investigation by Correctional Services have been launched to establish all
circumstances surrounding the escape.

Further details will be released later when investigations have been
completed.
