Month 50th anniversary

The Department of Correctional Services wishes to invite your good
institution to join management and staff when they pay tribute to women at a
Womenâs Month 50th anniversary event to be held on Friday, 25 August 2006, at
the Pretoria Management Area Rugby Sports Field at 9h00.
The Minister of Correctional Services, Mr Ngconde Balfour, MP, management
and staff members of the Department recognise the commemoration of the historic
march on 9 March 1956 by 20 000 gallant South African women who defied
imprisonment due to the struggles they faced and began the journey towards
gender equality, development and peace. The Deputy Minister of Correctional
Services, Ms Loretta Jacobus, will officiate the event.
The Department takes this opportunity to pay tribute to and salute the brave
women who marched for freedom and justice and further urge all women to take
their rightful place and forge ahead to create and build a caring correctional
system in this age of hope for corrections, rehabilitation and social
re-integration.
In celebrating: âAn age of hope, a national effort for womenâs empowermentâ
the Department resolves to continue to implement the provisions of the
Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women
(CEDAW) and the Beijing platform for action ratified by the South African
government.
We acknowledge the valuable contribution made by all women in South Africa
and in particular the Department of Correctional Services will recommit to
collectively push back frontiers of gender discrimination, abuse and poverty.
We also join hands with the rest of the African society and condemn all forms
of violence against women and children in the strongest terms.
