Efforts towards resourcing the fight against crime in South Africa were
taken a step further when Minister for Safety and Security Charles Nqakula
visited Italy this week.
Discussions during the visit focused on amongst others technology, illegal
immigration, preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, organised crime and
counter terrorism.
In the area of technology emphasis was placed on surveillance and lawful
monitoring as well as forensic work.
Apart from meeting industrialists and other experts in the area of
technology used in the detection of crime, the Minister met the Italian
Minister of the Interior, Mr Giuliano Amato, who is responsible for public
order and security maintenance.
Discussions during the meeting centred around:
* implementing public order and secure policing through the identification of
technical and operational guidelines as well as management goals
* ensuring technical and operational co-ordination within police services
* ensuring proper surveillance and lawful monitoring of criminal
activities
* countering illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Also agreed upon was that the Italian Minister would visit South Africa
later in the year to take the discussions further and hopefully finalise
agreements.
