questions regarding permanent peace in Burundi
29 May 2006
Dar es Salaam - In a speech during the launch of the new round of
negotiations between the government of Burundi and the Palipehutu - Forces for
National Liberation (Palipehutu FNL), Minister Charles Nqakula, facilitator
to the Burundi Peace Process indicated that it was almost three weeks ago when
he led a delegation to Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi. In all those countries
speaking with leaders of government and Palipehutu - FNL, the clear message
conveyed by all was that "peace for Burundi had become an urgent matter."
Yesterday, 28 May 2006, Minister Nqakula met at different times with the
delegations of the government of Burundi led by Brigadier-General Evariste
Ndayishimiye, Minister of Interior and Public Security in Burundi and
Palipehutu - FNL led by Mr.Agathon Rwasa. He commended both parties for having
"slightly changed their views to enable the launch to take place today.
Minister Nqakula indicated that that it was "the responsibility of the
leaders on the African continent to ensure that this African problem (Burundi
Peace Process) received the "full attention of the African leaders so that in
the end the solution for Burundi is an African solution."
Commending the regional leadership for their constructive role in the
Regional Initiative Minister Nqakula indicated that in the role as facilitator
"we will continue to rely on the leadership and guidance we have been accorded
by the leaders of Uganda, President Yoweri Museveni, Chairperson of the
Regional Initiative and President Jakaya Kikwete, the Deputy Chairperson of the
Initiative.
He further stated his belief "that we will continue to get a lot of
co-operation from the leader of Burundi, President Pierre Nkurunziza and the
leaders of Palipehutu FNL."
Concluding his address at the plenary session Minister Nqakula expressed his
appreciation to the Special Representative of the African Union (AU) and the
United Nations (UN) with whom he interacted yesterday on their advice and
leadership and stated that "he will continue to look upon them as a resource
and valuable advisors in the period ahead."
