7 July 2006
A strategic session was held at the South African Police Service (SAPS)
College, in Pretoria, on Friday, 7 July 2006, to plan for the next six
months.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for Safety and Security, Mr Charles
Nqakula and his deputy, Ms Susan Shabangu. The meeting was also attended by
senior police managers, including the National Commissioner, Mr Jackie Selebi,
from the national and provincial structures.
The meeting is a regular programme where the Minister interacts with police
management. On this occasion though, the meeting was extended to include other
role players, including the MECs from the various provinces.
The heads of Metro Police, who are working together regularly with the
police in a number of projects, participated in the meeting.
The meeting reviewed a number of projects dealing with especially aggravated
robberies that have been accompanied by the killing of civilians and some
police members. Special attention was paid to crimes in the 169 police priority
areas.
The Provincial Commissioners for KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape
and Gauteng gave reports which showed some slight increases in some crime types
and decreases in others.
During the next six months the focus of the police will be serious and
violent crimes, including murder, robbery and rape. There will therefore be
heightened police visibility which will include cordon-and-search operations as
well as roadblocks.
The programme for the search and confiscation of illegal firearms will be
accelerated given the role that firearms play in the commission of serious and
violent crimes in South Africa.
The Ministry and police top management remain committed to addressing the
levels of serious and violent crimes in South Africa.
