Activism in Mpumalanga
30 November 2007
Few vulnerable families at the Pixley Ka Seme Municipality in Volskrust are
to receive government's low cost houses during the 16 Days of Activism Against
Violence on Women and Children. During a recent visit to the municipality,
Department of Local Government and Housing MEC, Candith Mashego-Dlamini
identified challenges facing communities in receiving houses. MEC
Mashego-Dlamini ordered the rebuilding and expedition of housing delivery at
the area.
The hand over will bring a new lease of life to Mthembu at Sizameleni in
Wakkerstroom who has been staying in a mud house for over seven years and
pensioner Mashinini at Vukuzakhe in Volksrust who is staying with her five
grandchildren. Mashinini has been staying in a shack for a long time and it has
since been demolished to make way for her government house. Both Mthembu and
Mashinini are unemployed and are dependent on government grants. The houses
will be handed over to address their plight in support of the government's
campaign.
The hand over will be preceded by a community march aimed at raising
awareness about the campaign and other social disparities. Other departments
like Correctional Services, non-government organisations and Department of
Health and Social Services are to take part in the march. This is also to
improve partnerships between government, civil society and the private sector.
The march will start at Vukuzakhe Multi-Purpose Hall to the Local Police
Station.
