The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport will celebrate International
Museum Day at the Worcester and Beaufort West Museums respectively tomorrow, 18
May 2006. In line with this year's theme "Museums and Young People" activities
for the day will highlight the important role the youth can play to reconfigure
museums.
At the Beaufort West museum there will be family history workshops, and
local schools have been invited to debate on tangible and intangible
heritage.
The main event will take place at Worcester Museum where "Aunties Project",
a group of 12 women from the Cape Winelands who have made special contributions
to their communities, will share their life experiences and struggles with the
youth.
MEC W Jacobs who will deliver a keynote address at the main event in
Worcester says âThis is the first real opportunity for the affected communities
to take practical steps of ensuring that collections at museums were fully
representative of the cultural diversity and were being democratised "
The media is invited to celebrations at Worcester Museum from 09h00.
