Western Cape: Agriculture does its part for Housing with the creation of a
Green Environment link with Youth Day
23 June 2006
A new low cost housing development at Panorama outside Riversdal was visited
today by Premier Rasool and Minister Dyantyi.
This housing project at Panorama will at completion consist of 387 housing
units and approximately 54 youths will be employed to do building, painting,
plastering, roof work, etc.
The Department of Agriculture, however, also has an involvement and I am
particularly proud today on the contribution of the commercial sector to the
project, with the generous donation of fruit trees. Today five Pioneer Plum
Trees will also symbolically be planted at the project by the Premier, myself
and Minister Dyantyi. These trees are part of a delivery of 800 trees that will
in due course be planted here.
This big hearted donation of 800 trees by Christo Stemmet of Stemmet
Nursery, is hugely appreciated by the Provincial Government of the Western
Cape. Stemmet Nursery, based in Montagu, provides commercial farmers annually
with approximately 700 000 stone fruit trees mainly apricots, plums, peaches
and nectarines.
The symbolism with the planting of the trees is that the Pioneer, a locally
developed Plum variety is planted in Youth Month thereby always reminding the
community of the youth pioneers that 30 years ago began the struggle for
democracy. A struggle whose fruits we still enjoy today.
