C Dowry on train crash

Shock at accident, which killed at least 19 farm workers:
Statement by Western Cape Minister for Agriculture Cobus Dowry

13 November 2006

I have learned with shock of the accident at Faure near Somerset West in
which at least 19 contract farm workers were killed and injured when the truck
in which they were transported, collided with a train at a railway
crossing.

My heartfelt condolences and sympathy are extended to the families and loved
ones of those killed and injured in this tragic accident. I have also informed
the Acting Premier of the Western Cape, Mr Leonard Ramatlakane and wishes to
extend the sympathy of the Western Cape Provincial Government as well.

This is a huge loss for the farming community. We are, together with other
role players, in a process of collating all information on the accident. My
office has already been in contact with the farm management to offer the
necessary assistance.

I have instructed the Department of Agriculture in the Western Cape to be
available to assist in every possible way to support the people who are
affected through this tragedy. Officials of my department are already on the
scene to adhere to my request.

What is apparent is that this specific crossing has been the cause of
numerous accidents in the past and urgent action by the authorities is now
required.
