* bekendstelling van plaaswerkers wat na Frankryk gaan
24 Oktober 2006
This specific program was included in an agreement earlier this year when a
French delegation consisting of representatives from the Centre de Formation
Professionelle et de Promotion Agricole (CFPPA) Beaune, the Vice President
responsible for International Relations in the Burgundy Regional Council and
French wineries visited the Western Cape, from 1 to 6 May 2006 to negotiate the
continuation of an existing educational exchange programme in the wine
industry. This was done in terms of the bilateral Co-operation Agreement
between the Burgundy Region and the Western Cape Province, which was signed in
September 2002.
This project is named the Thuthukile Skweyiya Western Cape Burgundy Wine
Exchange Programme in honour of Ms Thuthukile Skweyiya, the former SA
Ambassador to France who was instrumental in the initiation of the exchange
programme. The primary aim of this project is to provide vocational training
and social upliftment to wine farm workers with no formal qualification up to
NQF level 4, but with a relevant experience in viticulture and cellar
technology, to obtain a recognized certificate. This project follows on a
successful first phase of the exchange programme pioneered by the CFPPA, South
African Wine Industry Trust (SAWIT) and the SA Embassy in Paris since 2001. The
project is developed in collaboration with the Centre de Formation
Professionelle et de Promotion Agricole (CFPPA) Beaune and the Conseil Regional
Bourgogne (Burgundy Regional Council). The project benefits primarily from the
financial support of the Western Cape Government and SAWIT on the South African
side and of the Burgundy Regional Council and French Department of Foreign
Affairs on the French side.
The project, which strengthens the bilateral co-operation between France and
South Africa as well as between Burgundy and the Western Cape, includes: The
exchange of learners at training centers, the implementation of joint
professional training in the wine industry, the exchange of students, and
practical internships.
We are proud of this programme and it has already born much fruit in that
students from both the wine and cheese making courses, have already made their
mark here at home, with the making and production of champion wine and
cheese.
To the students who have the privilege to go on this course I want to say,
you must go to France to enjoy the experience and to enrich yourselves with the
knowledge that you will gain from the experts, but you also go, not forgetting
that you are representing more than 200 000 other farm workers who would also
like to have a similar experience. Go, and come back with knowledge that you
can impart to them, as you must form part of the team that wants to make the
Western Cape a home for its entire people.
