Minerals and Energy to host Careers in Mining

6 August 2007

The Minister of Minerals and Energy Ms Buyelwa Sonjica together with Council
for Geoscience will be hosting Careers in Mining on Tuesday 7 August 2007 at
Segwaelane Hall, Bapong. Careers in Mining are an initiative by the department
to target learners in remote areas with the primary intention of encouraging
them to take up Careers in Mining. Four high schools have been identified and
invited for participation, viz., Mogale, Thaba-Morula, Rakgatla and Saint
Theresa. Several exhibitors will showcase career prospects in their respective
organisations.

The South African mining industry is the cornerstone of the country's
economy and makes a significant contribution to the economic growth, job
creation and foreign exchange earnings. The industry is currently experiencing
a boom due to high demand for commodities and faces a challenge of increased
production and deficit of requisite skills.

This unprecedented growth is envisaged to continue over the next few
decades, which growth requires even more skills. In addition, government's
deliberate policy intervention in transforming this industry from being solely
resource-based to knowledge based, through beneficiation, will require even
more skills set. It is against this context that the Department of Minerals and
Energy and Council for Geoscience are initiating this intervention that seeks
to contribute towards narrowing the skills-gap and ensuring that the
extrapolated growth in this sector is supported in a sustainable manner.

It is on this basis that the Department of Minerals and Energy jointly with
Council for Geoscience invite you to attend Careers in Mining on 7 August 2007,
at 09h00.
