Minister Sonjica invites media to the 30th anniversary of 1976
Youth Uprising

The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Buyelwa Sonjica invites the media to
the Department of Minerals and Energy’s commemoration of the 30th anniversary
of the 1976 Youth Uprising. The purposes of the commemoration are to ensure
that South Africans remember the origin of the 1976 uprising and to keep the
youth of today informed and aware of the contributions made by the youth of
1976 to the democracy that we now enjoy.

The Department will also use this opportunity to bid farewell to its former
Minister Hendricks and Deputy Minister Xingwana. The new Minister Buyelwa
Sonjica will unveil her plans and vision for the Department going forward and
will also launch the Youth in Energy and Mining (YEM) initiative. YEM is one of
the programmes aimed at assisting the youth of South Africa to participate in
the economic activities of our country mainly by arming them with the necessary
skills.
