Minister to brief the Western Cape Provincial Government about the progress
made and challenges faced in restructuring the Electricity Distribution
Industry (EDI) and establishment of the six Regional Electricity Distributors
(REDs).
The Minister of Minerals and Energy Ms Buyelwa Sonjica will on Thursday, 2
August 2007, brief the Premier's Co-ordinating Forum (PCF) of the Western Cape
about the progress made and challenges faced in the restructuring the
Electricity Distribution Industry (EDI) and establishment of the six
wall-to-wall REDs.

The main focus of the Minister's briefing will be the Cabinet decision of 25
October 2006 relating to the restructuring of the EDI and its implications.
Cabinet decided on 25 October 2006 to establish six wall to wall as public
entities that will be regulated by the National Energy Regulator of South
Africa (NERSA).
Significant progress has been made to implement the Cabinet decision and
this will be accordingly shared with the PCF.
The Minister's delegation will be composed of senior officials from the
Department of Minerals and Energy, the Chairman and CEO of EDI Holdings, Ms
Dolly Mokgatle and Ms Phindile Nzimande respectively, as well as other senior
managers.
The Minister has already had successful briefing sessions with Premiers'
Forums of the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Gauteng who expressed their
support for the Cabinet decision.
