3 April 2007
Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Baleka Mbete will tomorrow, Wednesday,
4 April 2007 host Tunisian and South African Women Roundtable in the Old
Assembly. The roundtable themed 'Women, Peace and Prosperity' is part of
progressive interAfrican exchange and culminates from a fiveday conference
which started in Pretoria on 1 to 5 April 52007.
The Tunisian delegation is led by Mme Aziza Hatira, President of National
Union of Tunisian Women (UNFT); SAWID (South African Women in Dialogue) Patron,
Mrs Zanele Mbeki, and various women groupings in ICT, business, law and civil
society from both countries. The dialogue is aimed at exchanging best practices
in poverty eradication strategies, legislative provisions and to propose
practical recommendations that can be followed in both countries.
The genesis of the conference dates back to September 2006, when the SAWID
Patron, Mrs Zanele Mbeki, and a delegation of 15 visited Tunisia as part of a
study to look at the successful poverty eradication strategies implemented in
Chile and Tunisia.
During a visit with the members of the UNTF, a series of bilateral meetings
were conceptualised to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the events in both
countries that hailed significant changes for women - the women's march to the
Union Building in Pretoria and the Promulgation of the Personal Code Tunisia
that abolished polygamy and brought about legislative equality in many areas
for women in that country.
