The MEC for Health in Gauteng, Brian Hlongwa, has taken note of an
unfortunate case where a newborn baby sustained burn wounds at the Sharpeville
Maternity and Obstetric unit.
The MEC extends his condolences and sympathy to the family of baby Dimpho
Hanyane.
The baby sustained burn wounds while a chief professional nurse was bathing
her. She was transferred to Sebokeng hospital where she died more than a week
later.
The MEC has received a preliminary report on the incident and a final report
is expected on Wednesday.
Hlongwa has instructed the department to review procedures taken when
bathing babies in all facilities and to advise him on what needs to be done to
prevent a similar occurrence.
The MEC has committed himself to improving the quality of healthcare in the
province and has urged health professionals to follow a people-centred and
patient-centred approach in dealing with communities.
"It is upon us to give patients a new experience, show them that we care and
treat them with compassion and dignity," he says.
