Gauteng Health MEC Brian Hlongwa will soon embark on a provincial roadshow
to all the regions and districts to inculcate the culture of patient-centricity
in line with Batho Pele principles.
The roadshow will also serve to introduce the newly appointed Head of
Department (HOD) to all departmental staff. The decision was taken at the
senior management's three-day Lekgotla in which the departmental challenges and
priorities were mooted.
"We intend meeting everyone within the department to share our vision and
objective of delivering quality health services to the people of Gauteng,"
Hlongwa told a media briefing.
Chief among departmental priorities is to nurture a patient-centred approach
and safeguard the needs and rights of patients. "It cannot be business as
usual. We need an integrated and all-inclusive approach to improve our public
health facilities, reduce waiting times at our facilities and curb the
disturbing exodus of health professionals from our institutions," the MEC
said.
During the roadshow the HOD and the department's senior executives are
expected to be publicly contracted to ensure the department delivers high
quality health services.
Hlongwa also hinted that the department will undertake a door to door
campaign with a view to promoting healthy lifestyles and advising Gauteng
people against high-risk behaviours. This cuts across the range of the health
spectrum from extreme drug resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB), HIV and AIDS,
sexually transmitted diseases, cancer, obesity and healthy nutrition.
