Preparations for the 2007 Freedom Day celebrations are at an advanced stage
as fellow countrymen will make their way to the political capital to
commemorate the day. The celebrations, to be held by the Gauteng Department of
Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in conjunction with the Tshwane
Metropolitan Council, is to take place tomorrow at the Union Buildings in
Tshwane.
Commemorations will be held in line with the national theme, 'Renewing our
pledge! A national partnership to build a better life for all'. Gauteng MECs,
Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Gwen Ramokgopa, councillors and other senior
government officials are expected to attend the event. Freedom Day is a
national public holiday recognised by government as a day to celebrate the
democratic achievements of government since 1994.
The Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Barbara Creecy,
strongly believes that in the 13th year of democracy, Freedom Day remains a
significant day of celebrations for the province and the country. "On this day
we remember the victory of the Rainbow Nation over apartheid tyranny and
oppression. We also commit ourselves to building a South Africa that truly
belongs to all," said Creecy.
The morning programme will include a five kilometre fun run or walk marathon
and a range of cultural activities. Prominent artists to feature tomorrow
include Kabelo, Skwatta Kamp, Vusi Mahlasela, the Grammy-winning Soweto Gospel
Choir and many more. Other interesting activities for the day will be a craft
fair of high quality produced goods and recreational games for young and old.
Various government departments will exhibit information about government
services and directly interact with communities. The festivities get underway
at 09h00 and will end at 16h00.
