MEC Cele to visit crime stricken contractors of P700

15 February 2007

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki
Cele will tomorrow, Friday, 16 February 2007 visit Ulundi area to meet with
contractors deployed at the construction site of road P700 linking Ulundi and
Richards Bay. The meeting is scheduled to take place on P700 site next to King
Cetshwayo residence at 12h00.

The meeting follows numerous complaints and concerns from contractors about
the accelerating crime rate which is particularly targeting emerging
contractors. There have been a number of hijackings of construction vehicles
reported in the area and many other irregularities. The MEC will meet with
contractors, traditional leaders, local government councillors and Department
of Transport stakeholders to discuss and map a way forward in finding a long
lasting solution to the challenge of crime in Ulundi.

The department's intervention comes after an outcry from contractors and
particularly those who are working on site P700. The department will engage all
relevant parties who will assist in resolving the matter which is seen as an
act of sabotage towards service delivery aimed at changing lives of the people
of the province.
