MEC Cele to officiate at the opening of the multi-million rand
road upgrading project

24 July 2006

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr
Bheki Cele, will tomorrow (25-07-2006) officiate the opening of the P577 Duffs
Road, in Newlands East, near V.N. Naik School for the Deaf at 10h00. Also
expected to attend is national Minister of Transport Mr Jeff Radebe and
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr S'bu Ndebele.

The construction of the R520 million project commenced in 2003 and is
expected to be completed by 2009, in time for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The
R136-million first phase of the road, from Duffs Road to Inanda Road, has been
completed.

Construction of the road falls under the National Construction Week, and
after its completion, the 14 km long road will provide the communities of
Inanda, KwaMashu, Ntuzuma and Newlands with a direct road link to the
industrial and commercial work areas of Pinetown and New Germany and provide
shorter routes for commuters.

The national government identified Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu as one of
the priority development nodes in the country and the construction of P577 was
identified as a project that could make a significant contribution to the
socio-economic upliftment of local communities.

Key participants have been the ward councillors, eThekwini Municipality, KZN
Department of Transport and KZN Department of Housing, in planning and
implementation processes, thereby promoting an integrated planning strategy
with good co-ordination between various spheres of government.

As an example, the simultaneous construction of Effingham Road to KwaMashu
known as Queen Nandi Road by eThekwini Municipality will soon provide a link
between N2 and P577. This link will create new access to N2 and also reduce
traffic congestion at the two adjacent interchanges.
