KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Bheki
Cele, will host a media briefing to officially launch Transport Month activity
plans for KwaZulu-Natal. The media briefing will be held at the Hilton Hotel
(Polo Room) in Durban on Monday, 2 October 2006, at 07h30 for 08h00.
The Transport Month campaign is a government initiative geared towards
strengthening the link between awareness-raising and policy measures to reduce
traffic congestion by particularly promoting the use of public transport. It is
particularly for this reason that the Minister of Transport, Jeff Radebe and
MECs for Transport declared October as National Transport Month at the
Transport Lekgotla in 2005 in order to promote sustainable transport solutions
such as walking, cycling, public transport and car travel with two or more
occupants and also to stimulate public reflection about the need to manage
unsustainable car use especially in the metropolitan cities of South
Africa.
Furthermore Transport Month is aimed at improving road infrastructure
projects which are aimed at rural development and in preparing for the 2010
Soccer World Cup. The Ethekwini Municipality will be in partnership with
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport in launching 2010 projects in the city
that are linked to the transport sector.
