Memorial service of eight people killed at Majuba Pass

19 July 2006

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr BH Cele,
will Thursday, 20 July 2006, attend the memorial service of eight victims that
were killed in a horror crash involving a taxi and a truck last week at N11
Majuba Pass outside Newcastle.

The memorial service will be held at Cecil Emitt Sports Ground, Vryheid, at
9h00 this Thursday.

The accident occurred when the truck cut the corner at a sharp curve and
collided head on with a minibus taxi, which was travelling at the opposite
direction. Eight people including the driver of the truck were killed while
eight other people sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Newcastle
provincial hospital.

"The rate of accidents involving heavy motor vehicles in the province is
ridiculously high and our law enforcement officers will double their efforts in
ensuring the safety of the people in the province. I urge all drivers
particularly truck and minibus drivers to keep to the rules of the road in
order to avoid such crashes that claim lives of innocent passengers," Cele
said.
