of children in support of Child Protection Week
1 June 2007
The Department of Community Safety and Liaison led by MEC Mr BH Cele has
earmarked 5 June 2007 to honour the rights of children in support of "Child
Protection Week." The initiative is aimed at empowering children in an
informational and educational manner. This will be done through an awareness
event to be held in Vryheid Emondlo whereby the department will also be
distributing a comic book called "Kanti Kuyoze Kube Nini?" that is aimed at
educating children about family and child abuse.
The comic book is based on the drama "Kanti Kuyoze Kube Nini" that was aired
in a number of radio stations during the 2005 and 2006 16 Days of Activism
against Women and Children abuse campaigns. The MEC for Transport, Community
Safety and Liaison Mr BH Cele will give the keynote address where he is
expected to call on all relevant stakeholders to form an integrated approach
towards the protection of children and their rights.
In an effort to fight family and child abuse, the Victim Empowerment
Directorate of the department has embarked on a process of rolling out the
comic book and Children's Safety Plan in schools around the province.
Activities leading up to the provincial event of Tuesday, 5 June 2007, began on
Monday, 28 May 2007, with awareness campaigns held at schools in Pomoroy,
Umsinga, Durban Metro, Newcastle and Ulundi.
It is anticipated that the roll out of the comic book "Kanti Kuyoze Kube
Nini" will help sound the alarm through more awareness on how children can
prevent and speak up against child abuse. It is also hoped that this roll out
will promote awareness of protective rights for children leading to the
eradication of women and child abuse.
Members of the media are encouraged to attend this provincial event.
