profession in South Africa
25 May 2006
Pretoria - The Auditor General (AG) has signed an agreement committing the
organisation to the annual support of the Thuthuka Bursary Fund, which is
managed by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) on
behalf of the AG and major audit firms. The bursary fund assists learners from
previously disadvantaged communities to become chartered accountants.
The formal agreement was signed on Tuesday, 23 May 2006, by Mr Shauket Fakie
and the SAICA President, Mr Ignatius Sehoole. This agreement underlines the AGs
commitment to employment equity and skills transfer.
The AG together with other major audit firms will contribute R750 000 for
the 2006 financial year (R1,000,000 for 2007 and onwards) to the bursary fund.
In terms of this agreement the AG will be allocated 30 bursary students for
2006 and 40 students from 2007 onwards.
âThe Auditor-General prides itself as an organisation that contributes to
the development of chartered accountants in South Africa. By forming a
partnership with SAICA we are able to reach more learners and also to actively
promote the transformation of the accounting profession,â Mr Fakie said.
The principal activities of the Thuthuka Bursary Fund are to establish and
maintain structures for carrying out and promoting skills development. Not only
will this contribute to changing the demographics of the chartered accountant
profession, but ultimately it will ensure that the membership of the profession
reflects the countryâs population demographics in terms of race and gender.
The Deputy Auditor-General, Mr Terence Nombembe adds, âAs an organisation
that believes in the continuous development of chartered accountants, we will
offer coaching and mentoring sessions to the successful candidates. In this way
we can ensure that they adhere to our vision of being an independent world
class organisation.â
