poverty now!
26 July 2007
The beginning of August marks the commencement of a number of events planned
to celebrate the national Women's Month. Government and its social partners
such as the Progressive Women's Movement of South Africa and the general gender
machinery structures have planned workshops, exhibitions, sports events, music
shows, seminars and many other activities to mark this important month on the
national calendar. Women's month provides an opportunity to reflect on the
gains made in our combined efforts to foster gender equality in all sectors of
our society.
The Department of Arts and Culture and the Northern Cape Provincial
Government will co-host the national Women's Day celebrations at Galeshewe
Stadium, Kimberly. There will be other events prior to 9 August and beyond in
both the Northern Cape Province as well as in other provinces.
The national theme for the 2007 Women's Day is emancipation, empowerment,
equality and eradication of poverty now! The theme acknowledges that while
significant progress has been achieved in the advancement and empowerment of
women, we still face a number of challenges when it comes to gender equality.
We therefore maintain that the ideal of women emancipation, empowerment,
equality and the eradication of poverty of which women are the most affected,
must happen now. On 8 August, the Department of Arts and Culture and the
Northern Cape government will launch the investing in culture projects as part
of the celebrations. The event will mainly focus on exhibitions of projects
that focus on rural development and anti-poverty. The celebrations will
continue on 9 August where President Thabo Mbeki is expected to give a keynote
address at Galeshewe stadium. A calendar of events will be available on the
website of the Department of Arts and Culture in due course.
