Former Mozambique President Chissano to deliver the Chief
Albert Luthuli Memorial Lecture

11 October 2007

The Department of Arts and Culture, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the
Luthuli Museum invite media to the Albert Luthuli Memorial Lecture on 27
October 2007. The Albert Luthuli Memorial Lecture is part of the Luthuli
National Legacy project which is one of the Cabinet-approved national legacy
projects to acknowledge all South Africans whose heritage was marginalised
under the apartheid rule.

Chief Albert Luthuli, the first African to receive a Nobel Peace Prize,
fought selflessly for human dignity, political freedom and social justice. The
previous lectures were delivered by President Thabo Mbeki and former Zambian
President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda.

The 2007 lecture will be presented by His Excellency Dr Joaquim Alberto
Chissano, the former President of the Republic of Mozambique under the theme
'Leadership and Reconciliation'. Dr Chissano is one the iconic figures who
played a leading role in the emancipation of Africa from colonialism. As
President of Mozambique, he led socio-economic reforms which have put the
country on a path to economic prosperity. He continues to contribute in
international peace and security efforts.

In honour of Chief Albert Luthuli, Dr Chissano will visit the Luthuli
Museum, Chief Luthuli's gravesite and public sculpture all in Groutville,
Kwadukuza, on 26 October 2007. Full details of the Kwadukuza tour will be
released in due course. Details of the lecture are as follows:
