The workshop to review the draft policy managing pesticides by the
Department of Agriculture is a consultation forum by stakeholders. Participants
included those from the agriculture sector, environmentalists, academics,
researchers and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The workshop was held at
the Reserve Bank in Pretoria earlier today, 26 September 2006.
Following the publication of the policy for public comments by the Minister
of Agriculture in April this year, the draft policy was developed. The policy
aims to review the regulatory framework of pesticides in South Africa currently
regulated under the Fertiliser, Farm Seeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock
Remedies Act, 1947 (Act No 36 of 1947).
The newly drafted policy among others sets a framework for:
* scientific research and monitoring to support effective decision
making
* promote awareness and foster public participation
* sustainable pest management including the principles and practises of
integrated pest management and organic production
* product assessment and regulation for health and environment protection
* corporative governance in decision making through an advisory committee.
Further consultation is planned during the process leading to the drafting
of the Bill.
