Agriculture met with Ostrich Business Chamber

National Department of Agriculture meet up with the Ostrich
Industry

27 February 2006

The Department of Agriculture met with the Ostrich Business Chamber in
Oudtshoorn last week. The meeting forms part of a several key meeting between
government and key role players within the agriculture industry.

Among the issues discussed were: the strengthening and continued monitoring
of disease outbreaks such as the Avian Influenza (AI); AgriBEE; global and
national trade opportunities and the strengthening of partnerships between
government and the ostrich industry. This meeting comes as the South Africa
ostrich industry had been declared AI free in 2005 and still managed to show a
steady growth in its market share.

Commenting after the meeting, Mr Anton Kruger, CEO of the Ostrich Business
Chamber said that the success of the industry rests of government and industry
participation in monitoring potential negative issues such as the outbreak of
Avian Influenza in order for the industry to continue growing in the
international arena.

This meeting, like many others that were held between government and the
ostrich industry will help ensure that the State Veterinarian is well informed
of the industry’s needs as well as monitor and assist where possible, in
identifying possible areas of growth and partnership for the industry.
