22 January 2007
The Ministry for Agriculture and Land Affairs cordially invites members of
the media to attend a consultative meeting with gender related organisations in
South Africa. This is done as part of the build-up towards the 4th World
Congress on Rural Women, taking place in Durban, South Africa in April this
year. Amongst the organisations invited are Community Based Organisations,
Labour e.g. Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), Religious and
Church Organisations, Organised Agriculture including National African Farmers'
Unions (NAFU), Free State Agricultural Union (FAU), the Gender Commission and
other relevant stakeholders.
During the Congress delegates from around the world will unite for the
largest rural women's conference ever held on the African continent.
The South African Ministry for Agriculture and Land Affairs has been tasked
to organise the Fourth World Congress on Rural Women, the first of its kind to
be held on the African continent. The Congress will provide a platform for
policy makers, donors, development agencies, non-governmental organisations and
government representatives from Africa and International organisations to
discuss, share lessons and experiences on mechanisms to address the plight of
rural women.
The World Congress on Rural Women is a non-governmental, cross-sectoral
global initiative aimed at discussing issues pertaining to rural women and
developing practical solutions to challenges they face in the 21st Century. The
first Congress took place in Australia in 1994, the second in the United States
of America in 1998 and the third at Madrid, Spain in October 2002.
The hosting of the Fourth World Congress on Rural Women by Africa was
informed by the resolutions of the 2002 Congress held in Spain.
