to fast-track land summit recommendations
19 January 2006
The Ministry for Agriculture and Land Affairs convened a workshop today with
all the relevant stakeholders who participated in the planning of the July 2005
Land Summit as well as those who attended to chart a process for the
implementation of the summit recommendations.
At the workshop, held in Pretoria, the summit secretariat presented a draft
report of the summit, delegates reflected on progress made and took specific
resolutions to fast-track the implementation of summit recommendations.
The Ministry's report highlighted the following to have been undertaken
post-summit:
* The production of a draft report of the land summit
* The briefings to the Parliamentary Committees, relevant MECs and some
clusters of the Forum of South African Directors-General (FOSAD)
* Engaging organised agriculture
* Incorporation of some of the land summit issues in the AgriBEE charter
through the recent AgriBEE consultative conference
* Issues relating to the Land Summit were also raised for consideration and
inclusion in the land and agrarian section of the Accelerated and Shared
Economic Growth Initiative (ASGI-SA).
The workshop also endorsed the summit report, all agreeing that it
sufficiently reflected the spirit and content of the summit discussions and
resolutions.
To fast-track implementation, the workshop took the following
resolutions:
* That Government develop a framework/proposal for implementation
* That Government lead a holistic approach that would include stakeholders at
national, provincial and local level
* To create a steering committee to drive the post land-summit process (that
would, amongst others create task teams and/or technical task teams to look
into issues on what is needed for amendment to legislation)
Civil society is expected to provide names of representatives to serve in
the steering committee by Monday (23 January) and the steering committee to
meet by end of first week in February.
