Traditional leaders told to work together to alleviate
poverty

5 October 2007

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana kicked off his two-day Imbizo in
Polokwane with an appeal to traditional leaders to work together with
government in addressing poverty alleviation in the rural areas. Addressing
about 150 traditional leaders in Polokwane today, the Minister called on the
leaders to organise themselves and approach poverty alleviation and job
creation as a collective.

"It is important for leaders to work together with the department of labour
to identify opportunities for skills training in their communities." said the
Minister.

Responding to a question around the problem of corruption among government
Officials, the Minister said the issue of corruption particularly on
procurement, is hampering service delivery. "But we call on you to blow the
whistle on corrupt officials. You must report official's unbecoming conduct so
we can take the necessary action against them."

Earlier the Minister did a walk-about at Limpopo Mall Hawkers Facility where
close to 40 women benefited from training funded by the Department of Labour.
The Minister called for closer co-operation among the local authorities and the
department in identifying training needs.

"We have the database of accredited training providers and therefore are
best placed to provide the services and funding."

The Minister concluded the first day of Imbizo with a meeting with a
consultation meeting with stakeholders. Tomorrow he will lead inspections on
compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act at Peter Mokaba Stadium,
which is one of the venues for the 2010 World Cup and the South African
Breweries outfit in Polokwane.
