M Mdladlana on critical skills

Minister says "critical skills, the way for South Africa to
holds its own"

10 May 2007

Labour Minister Membathisi Mdladlana has urged the nation to try hard to
advance into a nation skilled enough to find its own solutions.

In a keynote address of a graduation ceremony of 50 Fort Hare University
Accounting undergraduate students in Johannesburg today, Thursday, Minister
Mdladlana said the key to the nation's prosperity lay on more young people
obtaining such skills as Accounting.

The 50 forms part of students to have completed their BCom Accounting
qualifications under the auspices of the Thuthuka Education Upliftment
Project.

The Minister said the qualifications would come in very handy for the
country as it prepares to host the international community and showcase its
abilities during the 2010 World Cup.

"You will be the brains encouraging investors to embrace Africa. You will be
the shining beacons instrumental in restoring Africa's pride," he said.

The Minister lauded the Thuthuka Programme and its objectives of uplifting
learners from previously disadvantaged backgrounds on such critical subjects as
mathematics and accounting.

"We talk of scarce and critical skills, all because it was believed that
black children were not good enough to become architects of their future. The
South African government is working hard to ensure that we create a generation
of scientists, mathematicians, accountants and statisticians who will take
Africa's development forward," he said.
