UIF pays beneficiaries close to two billion

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) has paid over R1 990 billion to
Eastern Cape beneficiaries during the 2006/07 financial year.

This was announced at a recent meeting of regional heads of the Department
of Labour. At the same gathering, it was learned that 421 000 new claims for
UIF were approved.

Chris Mafu, business unit manager for the province, said: "Other claims paid
included illness benefits where R180 million was granted, a total of R419
million for maternity, with R247 million being paid to 25 000 claimants in
dependents' benefit."

Meanwhile, 867 applications for compensation fund claims were received,
Zolisa Sigabi, Departmental spokesperson said. She said over R50 million had
already been paid to beneficiaries and service providers in the region.
