Labour inspectors swoop on South African National Defence Force
(SANDF)

25 July 2007

Labour department inspectors have ordered a shutdown of the South African
National Defence Force (SANDF) Base's fuel depot at the 43rd SA Brigade in
Wallmansthal outside of Pretoria.

Following reports of fuel leaks at the Base, labour inspectors were
dispatched to the Wallmansthal SANDF Base, where inspections revealed gross
violations of Section 30 of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.

Inspectors discovered that fuel (petrol and diesel) was leaking from under
ground pipes at the fuel depot. The fumes of the fuel spillage were also
evident in the toilets which have since been blocked from access.

In terms of the prohibition notice served, measures have to be taken to
prevent further leakages, with an environmental impact assessment on the spill
submitted before the notice can be rescinded.

Labour spokesperson Zolisa Sigabi says the Department's inspectorate had
also ordered an immediate disconnection of electricity supply to the fuel
depot.

"We have an obligation and responsibility in terms of the OHS Act to enforce
the law and ensure the safety of all workers both in the private and public
sector," she said.

Earlier this year, labour inspectors in Nelspruit shut down the Department
of Labour's own offices for health and safety reasons. A prohibition notice can
be withdrawn at any time provided the employer complies with the directives as
contained in the original prohibition order.
