Labour on Sasolburg blast

Sasolburg Blast-unions must strengthen the role of safety
representatives

6 June 2006

The Department of Labour inspectors are working around the clock in an
attempt to establish facts surrounding the blast, which has left more a dozen
workers injured during the early morning explosion in Vencopark, Sasolburg
today.

One worker suffered second and third degree burns, while twelve others were
taken for observation at Sasol’s medical centre.

Mokgadi Pela, who is the spokesperson for Labour Minister Membathisi
Mdladlana, said their patience was wearing thin against employers who
considered profits before the lives of the workers.

He also challenged unions to establish or strengthen the role of safety
representatives in their workplaces.
