Labour inspectors have turned the heat on Limpopo municipalities, having
already slapped two of them with work prohibitions for flouting occupational
health and safety regulations since Monday.
The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality has been served with two prohibition notices
after inspectors found that employees working with chlorine were not equipped
with suitable respiratory protective clothing as required in terms of hazardous
chemical substances regulations.
At the same site, inspectors further ordered a halt to the use of lifting
machines and tackles as it became clear the machinery had not been serviced
before use as prescribed by the manufacturer and in terms of the driven
machinery regulations.
The orders mean the employer, who was given two weeks to comply or face a
possible complete shutdown, will not use or permit use of the machinery until
they are properly serviced.
Meanwhile the Bela-Bela Municipality in the same province suffered a similar
fate, with inspectors prohibiting the use of an untested compressor.
The three closures add up to the 10 contravention and three improvement
notices that inspectors have issued on 25 site visits they have made since the
five-day blitz scheduled to end on Friday.
